Growing Practices
Burning Bush Gardens uses no pesticides or herbicides on its crops, and uses cover crops and manure to enrich the soil. The farm uses mineral additives and some synthetic fertilizers; according to Ryan Platte, “We are farming to produce high-quality, well-mineralized food for ourselves and our neighbors. This is only possible by cooperating with ecology, optimizing soil conditions for plants and beneficial microbes. We invest heavily in our soil to make sure the mineral balance is optimal. We do not merely put back in what we take out, but we test our soil using the best available techniques and apply an intensive amendment program to make a full spectrum of minerals very available to our crops. We measure success in available calcium, mineral balance, soil life and sugar content of our crops.”
