The “food less traveled” will soon return to the South Wedge; opening day for the 2012 South Wedge Farmers Market is Thursday, June 7. The market will again be held in the shady parking lot behind Boulder Coffee at 100 Alexander Street, at S. Clinton. Market hours are 4 to 7 pm. The South Wedge Planning Committee’s executive director, John Page, will open the market with the traditional Tossing of the Lettuce. The lucky shopper who catches the lettuce will receive a bag of market treats.

New Vendors

Some new vendors join old favorites in this year’s line-up. The market welcomes Paul Loomis of Flowed Land Permaculture in Hilton; Paul will offer shiitake, oyster, and wine cap mushrooms, plus cage-free eggs and some unusual fruits such as Goji berries and currants. Dennis Lepel of Lakestone Family Farm will bring a variety of mixed vegetables and chicken to the market; a first-year farmer, Dennis is applying for organic certification. Garry and Bobbi Wohlschlegel of Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will offer maple syrup plus other maple treats including maple cream spread, granulated maple sugar, and maple cotton fluff. Andy Papineau will have a large variety of sustainably-grown vegetables, plus eggs and honey from his farm, Andy’s Specialty Garlic farm. Karen and Stan Bischoping from Williamson will join the market later in the season with a wonderful assortment of fruits, including antique and heirloom varieties of apples, gooseberries, raspberries, peaches, quince, and crabapple. A full list of this year’s vendors is on this page.

EBT Bonus Program

The EBT bonus program returns to the market, funded through a grant from the USDA. EBT customers who purchase $10 in EBT tokens will receive a $5 bonus (limit one bonus per family per week, as long as funds are available). The market will also host a food drive on the fourth Thursday of each month to support the food ministry at Calvary St. Andrews church; please give generously to those in our community who need our help.

Thanks to our Sponsor!

The South Wedge Farmers Market is pleased to partner with the Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union, which is sponsoring this year’s market. We are grateful for the support of Genesee Co-op FCU, which is member-owned and offers low-cost financial services to Rochester residents from its offices at 395 Gregory Street. We also appreciate a generous donation to the market from Konar Properties.

The South Wedge Farmers Market is a project of the South Wedge Planning Committee. For more information, sign up for email newsletters on this page under “Manage Subscription.” More information is available if you “like” the market’s Facebook page.
